The Exhibition
The digital exhibition space is an artist curated experience. Sitting within the coal transporter - the participants travel up through a custom made escalator viewing local digital artists' work. Learning to become more creative starts from being inspired. By showcasing local artists, it provides a stronger sense of community and allows artists to have a platform to exhibit their work.
This space tackles movement by challenging ways to enter a building. It is only accessible through the Coal Handling shed and exited through the boiler house. It offers an alternate and unexpected way to circulate the site.

ADMIRE
With technology becoming so integrated with our daily lives, it's no surprise that digital artworks are becoming ever popular. A space to showcase these works in a casual setting can give more opportunities to aspiring artists.
The is circulated through an escalator. It's important to have multiple modes and translation of movement that can cater to all ability types. An individual who is not mobile enough for the gymnasium has this space that they can come to and admire artworks while 'moving'. Having a moving exhibition also creates both challenges and opportunities for the artists. It's a space that challenges the way we both observe and design for exhibitions.
Designing the Escalator
Through the Japanese precedent escalators, it's clear that designing an accessible escalator is possible. So why is it not more common?
The depth and height that the platform requires means that the escalator wont be efficient enough. It will limit the amount of users that can operate it at once (to be specific, the functionality will be reduced by 2/3), hence will not be a financially intelligent investment for most civic spaces.
However, designing one for this exhibition space is perfectly justified. The escalator isn't a high traffic mode of circulation. It is designed to be a slow moving space that allows for observation and admiration of art. Not only that, having a fully accessible and user friendly escalator will promote the inclusivity of the space as well as the mental and emotional wellbeing of users.
